Why We Choose The Leaves From The Top of The Tobacco Plant (And Why We Can)

Not all parts of a tobacco plant are the same. And not all of them are easy to work with.

At the top of the tobacco plant, closest to the sun, are the leaves most cigar makers approach with caution. They’re thicker. Oilier. More potent. Rich in nicotine and flavor but also in sharpness, bitterness, and unpredictability.

Most blends avoid them entirely. We didn’t.

As a tobacco plant grows, the upper leaves, called ligero, receive the most sunlight. That exposure creates density, strength, and depth. These leaves are where tobacco develops its boldest character. They’re also where mistakes are hardest to hide.

Without careful handling, top leaves can overpower a blend. They can burn hot. They can taste harsh. They can dominate rather than support. Which is why they’re often used sparingly, if at all.

Strength gets blamed for a lot of things it didn’t do. But strength was never the problem, harshness was. The truth is, bold tobacco isn’t inherently aggressive, it’s simply unfinished when rushed. What makes top-priming leaves difficult isn’t their power, but the time and care required to make them balanced.

At Bariay 1492, we believe flavor shouldn’t be diluted to be approachable. It should be refined. That belief is what led us to our third fermentation. Traditional fermentation does a lot of the work. But for top leaves, it’s often not enough. Our trade-secret third fermentation allows the tobacco to continue breaking down compounds that cause harshness, without stripping away the oils, nicotine, or complexity that make these leaves special.

The result isn’t a weaker cigar. It’s a cleaner one.

This extra step gives us access to tobacco most blends can’t comfortably use. It lets us lean into the top of the plant without punishing the palate. Because we’re not trying to rush it; top leaves demand patience. They require restraint in blending and confidence in process. They don’t forgive shortcuts.

But when handled correctly, they deliver something rare: depth without bitterness and strength without burn. This is why our cigars feel full without feeling heavy. Why the nicotine arrives steady, not sharp. Why the smoke lingers clean.

When you smoke a Bariay cigar, you’re tasting time and intention. We don’t choose top leaves to prove a point. We choose them because they offer more, when you’re willing to do the work. More structure and more flavor.

Some things aren’t meant to be softened by avoidance. They’re meant to be understood, respected, and finished properly. The top of the plant holds the tobacco’s fullest expression. With the right fermentation, it becomes not something to fear, but something to build around.

That’s the difference.

That’s the craft.

That’s Bariay 1492.
